Stephen is a member of our Dispute Resolution department. He also heads our Banking and Financial disputes group and our cross-department financial sector group. His work includes dealing with bank and financial market disputes and investor disputes. Stephen is fascinated by the workings of the financial markets and by products such as derivatives. He has been a commentator on these issues in the Press and on television and radio.
Stephen’s background is one of very wide commercial litigation and arbitration experience, which continues. He claims to have litigated over most things, ranging from a plane load of carnations where the air conditioning failed to a defective giant valve for a North Sea oil platform. Stephen has also dealt with many cases of white collar fraud and asset tracing and is a member of the Fraud Advisory Panel.
His approach is essentially a commercial one. His aim is to bring disputes to an end in a way that is acceptable to the client and at the lowest cost. His work often has an international element. He heads the firm’s International Committee and aims to achieve one - day business visits to one or two continental European cities per month to meet clients and contacts.
He is founder and chairman of the Banking Litigation Network, an international association of independent law firms with a specialisation in handling complex disputes with banks and other financial institutions and with members in more than 20 jurisdictions.
Stephen is a member of the Commercial Litigation Association, the Fides Network Group, the Financial Services Lawyers Association, the Fraud Advisory Panel, the International Bar Association and the London Solicitors Litigation Association.
He is interested in achieving law reform to reduce the need for clients to engage in litigation and participates actively in an All Party Parliamentary Group that focuses on the financial services field. In February 2017, he was appointed as a member of an APPG inquiry into methods of alternative dispute resolution for businesses involved in financial disputes
