PRESS RELEASE: Collyer Bristow Gallery awards £2000 award to recent art school graduate at Exceptional exhibition opening

21 Jun 2018
  • The new Collyer Bristow Gallery exhibition displaying work from graduates of three leading art schools opened yesterday evening.
  • The £2000 Graduate Art Award was won by Lorraine Fossi, a graduate of City & Guilds of London Art School.

The private view for the Exceptional Graduate Show took place last night with guests coming through the doors to see the diverse new exhibition comprising of work from graduates of three leading art schools: Goldsmiths, Middlesex and City & Guilds of London Art School. This award and exhibition opportunity is aimed at supporting artists, who graduated from their BA, MA & Post Graduate Diploma programmes between 2015 and 2017, in the challenging period post-graduation.

The Collyer Bristow Exceptional award of £2000 was awarded to Lorraine Fossi, a graduate of City & Guilds of London Art School. Her work addresses the residues of International Modernism, whilst being complicated by material sensitivities, memory, narrative and perceptual ambiguity. Oli Epp and Robyn Litchfield, both also graduates of City & Guilds, were highly commended with Robyn being voted the winner of the Staff Prize by Collyer Bristow employees.

In discussion about the value of the Collyer Bristow Graduate Award, Rosalind Davis, the Collyer Bristow Gallery’s independent curator and graduate of the RCA, explained: “It can be difficult for new graduates to find a platform for their work, but this Award creates an environment where support is made available to emerging artists in the precarious initial years after graduation. It brings their work to new audiences, raising their profiles and helping them to create new professional networks.”

The judges of the award were: Robert Priseman, (Priseman Seabrook Collection), Anna Bromwich (Curator and Consultant, The Mall Galleries), Martin Caiger-Smith (Head of MA in curating at the Courtauld Gallery), Rosalind Davis (Collyer Bristow Permanent Curator, artist and writer) and Steven Heffer (Head of the Gallery Committee and artist).

The Collyer Bristow Gallery, the firm’s in-house art gallery, is proud to have championed emerging talent in contemporary art for twenty-five years.
