Mark Harrop, Senior Associate in the Family team comments on the Supreme Court's ruling in Owens v Owens case

25 Jul 2018

Mark comments: "It cannot be right, in this day and age, for anyone to be trapped in a loveless marriage on what many will consider a technicality."

"If the state wants to promote marriage it has many options open to it. It could offer greater tax incentives, or provide free practical or therapeutic support to struggling couples. It assists nobody, least of all their children, to lock people in marriages that have already broken down."

"The case for divorce law to be reformed is now overwhelming.  It is appalling that anyone should have to fight their way through court to obtain a divorce.  There is no good reason why it should not be a purely administrative process like filing a tax return or, indeed, getting married in the first place."
