PRESS RELEASE : Middlesex and Goldsmiths artists exhibit at leading law firm

02 Oct 2014

New graduates and students from Middlesex University and Goldsmiths, University of London will be showcasing their work in a curated exhibition at a leading London law firm.

The works of the talented students has been chosen to appear at the Collyer Bristow Gallery, a bespoke space in central London. One artist will be selected by Emma Dexter, Director of Visual Arts at the British Council, to receive the new Collyer Bristow award of £2,000.

Collyer Bristow LLP - a well-established UK law firm with offices in London and Geneva - has been championing emerging talent in contemporary art for nearly twenty years.

The pieces have been selected by curators Day + Gluckman, who work directly with artists with rigorous and inspiring art practices to create fresh, witty and thought-provoking exhibitions.

This year, Day + Gluckman chose work that they felt was reflective of the best of contemporary visual arts practice, and that would resonate within the unique Collyer Bristow gallery space.

The varied collection will include a dramatic cardboard installation inhabiting the reception area, and an invitation to gyrate with the EDL - the English Disco Lovers!

More familiar media is represented through painting and photographs, with subject matter presenting enigmatic, sometimes painfully personal, often hilarious, contemporary snapshots.

Middlesex University graduate Chris Alton said: “I'll be exhibiting a project I've been working on for the past two years, English Disco Lovers. The piece blends socio-political phenomenon with real life activism - it's a deployment of disco against belligerent xenophobia that's spawned a real life political movement. Showing the project as part of the Collyer Bristow graduate exhibition is an exciting opportunity, as it takes the work back to its art-fuelled roots."

Richard Noble, Head of the Department of Art at Goldsmiths, said: “We are delighted our students have been invited to take part in Collyer Bristow’s newest exhibition dedicated to emerging artists. The public will experience some truly innovative works and get a glimpse of some spectacular pieces by the next generation of artists.”

The exhibition runs from 9 October 2014 until 28 January 2015, at the Collyer Bristow Gallery,  4 Bedford Row, Holborn, London WC1R 4TF.

A private view will be held on Wednesday 8 October, 6.00 – 8.00pm.
